Summer Fishing

Summer fishing

The back country streams and rivers open 1st October and close 30th April.

October, November

October & November offer some dry fly and great nymph fishing to fish who have not seen an angler for 5 months. Many trophy fish are caught at this time of year and they are relaxing months to visit New Zealand.

December, January, February, March, April

December marks the beginning of consistent dry fly action that often carries on into April. As temperatures rise, dry fly fishing comes into its own with Mayfly and Caddis coming off the rivers. The cicadas generally start mid December - music to the ears of every angler!

Fishing Options

4X4 Trips

Excellent fishing is available on rivers and streams within a short drive of Taupo. On occasions we may travel up to an hour and a half further a field. Our guides all drive comfortable, modern 4X4 vehicles.

Helicopter Trips

Flying by helicopter is a great way to access the more remote New Zealand wilderness rivers. The thrill of the flight coupled with the awesome fishing makes for a most memorable experience. The pilots we use have an excellent safety record.

Raft Trips

The raft allows us to fish waters inaccessible by foot. It is a relaxing and enjoyable way to see and fish the rivers - an excellent mode of transport for all ages.

Campouts

Campouts are for the angler keen to spend a night on the bank of a river, eat under the stars and fish the evening rise. This can be an ideal way to get two days fishing for the cost of one fly out!

Summer Temperatures

Daylight is from 6am to 9.30pm and temperatures range from 65 to 90 F (18 - 31 C).
